Good for Your Health?

To look “bronzer” or a little bit darker has been an occasional goal or even an obsession for others. People would lie on the beach for hours to get maximum exposure to the sun they desired. However, with the development of tanning beds, having a “bronzer” looks became more convenient and even more private.
Tanning beds enable one to have tanning sessions in any time of the day and any season of the year. Moreover, tanning beds, combined with some skin applications, will deliver the desired results in just a few minutes, rather than the many hours some people spent on the beach exposing themselves to direct sunlight.
It’s really now a fact that tanning beds are more attractive to most tanning enthusiasts. However, most reasons tanning bed’s users indicated for such patronage are unfounded or lack scientific proof. Like for instance, some believed using tanning bed helps clear up their acne. But actually what it does is simply drying up the pores. Others claim that some of their skin conditions are being cured. However, no medical proof to support the mentioned initial benefits.
Another main reason why people keep coming back to tanning bed salons is that it became their addictive habit with accompanying psychological reasons. Some users report having better moods and relaxation after visits to the salon, such observations were supported by studies conducted by the American Academy of Dermatology.
Another more profound pros of using tanning bed is that it offers convenience and privacy, especially when used at the comfort of one’s own home. Tanning bed actually don’t offer much pros when considering the numerous cons that come along with it.
In order to understand the cons of tanning beds, it would help to know what tanning bed emits. The main element of the tanning bed are the tubular bulbs that surround the person inside tanning chamber. These tubular bulbs emit ultraviolet radiation which penetrate deep into the skin. So what does it means to allow ultraviolet rays penetrate into your skin? Ultraviolet rays has been known to cause melanoma, the deadliest form of all skin cancer. Even moderate exposure to tanning bed could cause such cancer.
According to recent studies, 1.3 million people will be diagnosed with melanoma due to continued use of tanning beds. So is tanning bed worth the risk? definitely not, the cons outweighs the pros as far as tanning beds are concerned.
Moreover, ultraviolet radiation from tanning bed also cause premature aging of the skin by causing damage to genetic and molecular level. The same thing that makes one look good for some time will one day cause him to look older than his age.
Some other studies also showed that during artificial tanning session, the eye is exposed to 100 times more UV radiation than what it could get directly from the sun. Even the use of sunglasses during the sessions will no prevent the radiation in penetrating the eye. Such damaging UV radiation could contribute to corneal burns, cataracts and even retinal damage.
Tanning bed is actually a good invention in terms of providing faster tanning compared to spending hours on the beach. Not to mention the convenience it offers. However, when it comes to one’s health, having to expose oneself to UV rays in the tanning bed is not good to your health.
